How to Secure Charms to a Charm Bracelet
If you are planning on getting yourself a charm bracelet or giving one to someone else, these is always a bit of mystery as to how to get the charms onto the bracelet. There are actually several different ways to attach charms and which method you select will depend on the style of charm and the type of bracelet.
For charms that are going to always stay on one bracelet, the very most secure way to connect the two is by actually soldering the charm rings to the bracelet. This can be done very inexpensively by your jeweler and is really the very best option. Not only will the charms be professionally attached to the bracelet, but the ring is permanent, meaning there is very little chance of the charms falling off from the ring popping open accidentally.
Not everyone always wants to wear the same charms on the same bracelet, so a permanent solder may not be a good choice. For those that are going to want to move or change charms, there are some very safe and secure types of rings that will work.
One common type of ring used to connect either gold charms or silver charms to bracelets is the split ring. This is very much like the ring on a key chain where the rings split into two, with the charm and the bracelet wound through the ring to the center.
A slightly faster option for changing charms is to use a spring ring, which is often used as a closure on necklaces or bracelets. A spring ring has a small lever on one side that is depressed to open a side of the ring and allow the charm and bracelet to be attached. Using spring or split rings does have some drawbacks as they can wear if the charms are heavy or the bracelet has a thick link.
Often both split rings and spring rings are seen with lighter, more delicate styles of bracelets and for lightweight styles of charms. Longer charms, provided they are very light are also a good match for these particular types of clasps.
For heavy charms or for bracelets with heavier links that will rub on the smaller rings, lobster clasps that are thicker and stronger are a very safe and secure option. These lobster clasp charms are available in several different metals to blend with the bracelet.
Maintaining and checking your charms and their attachment to the bracelet regularly is also an important consideration. Checking the rings every few months will allow you to replace any that are damaged or wearing thin, before you actually have any lost charms.
